Mr. M. Sumner

Mr. Gordon M. Sumner, 79, of Norman Park formerly of Sumner, died Wednesday February 29, 2012 at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday March 3, 2012 at Banks Funeral Home Chapel with interment to follow in the Pine Forest Cemetery with Dr. Jimmy Voyles officiating. Mr. Gordon Sumner was born on July 21, 1932 to the late John Milton and Catherine Ellen Sizemore Sumner in Worth County where he lived most of his life. He was educated in public schools in Poulan and Sylvester High School. Mr. Sumner was engaged in farming and raising beef cattle all his adult life and the President of Sumner Rainbow Farm Services, Sumner Peanut Company and was also part owner of Doerun Gin Company. Mr. Sumner also served on the Board of Directors of Chem-Nut for 28 years. He was very active in business and community related civic organizations such as Sylvester's Lions Club, Farm Bureau, Chamber of Commerce, Board of Directors of Palmyra Park Hospital, Georgia Peanut Commission, Worth County Commissioners and a director for Mitchell EMC for 30 years. In addition to his parents Mr. Sumner was preceded in death by his first wife, Jean Jenkins Sumner on January 16, 2009. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Griffin Sumner of Norman Park; son, Mike Sumner (Genia) of Sylvester; daughters, Angie S. Davis (Arlen) of Sylvester and Katherine S. Westerfield (David) of Augusta; step-children, Glenda Jernigan (Ken) of Lenox, Lauri Jo Bennett (Mike) of Norman Park; grandchildren, Gordon Sumner (Jessica), Bethany Sumner, Andrew Sumner (Shawna),Trent Davis (Mandy Slappey), Justin Davis, Katie Prichard (Clay), Lawson Westerfield, Katie & Josh McMillan; step-grandchildren, Kristin Moore (Eric), Genna Jernigan, Joe Jernigan, Mikelyn Bennett, Hal Bennett, Joe Ben Griffin; great- grandchildren, Gordon Taylor Sumner, Madeline Sumner, Adam Sumner, Ashton McMillan & Sawyer Slappey; step-great-grandchild, Ellie Ann Moore; Mr. Sumner's extended family included the Vaughn Willis Family.
