Kenneth “Kenny” Raymond Backus of Palm Harbor, Florida, passed away on Monday, July 6, 2026, at the age of 63. A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, August 9, 2026, at the family residence (668 Backus Rd, Palm Harbor, FL) to honor the Kenny's life. The family asks everyone to come as you are, bring a story, and help them celebrate a life well lived. Born on December 28, 1962, in Arcadia, Florida, to Leon Backus Jr. and Kathryn (Reed) Backus, Kenny was a self-made craftsman with an extraordinary gift for building, fixing, and creating just about anything. But the greatest thing he ever built was the countless friendships and relationships that spanned a lifetime. If someone needed help, Kenny never hesitated. Whether it meant spending an afternoon repairing a neighbor's home or driving across multiple states to lend a hand, he showed up. His generosity knew no limits, and he gave his time, talents, and heart freely, never expecting anything in return. Kenny had a smile that could brighten any room and a laugh that was impossible not to join. He had a rare gift for making every person he met feel seen, valued, and like they mattered. Strangers quickly became friends, and friends became family. His kindness, charisma, and unwavering loyalty left an unforgettable impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him. To many, Kenny was a legend in the sky. A world-class canopy formation skydiver, his passion for the sport took him across the United States and around the world, where he formed lifelong friendships with fellow skydivers who became an extension of his family. His remarkable skill earned him a place on internationally recognized record-setting canopy formation jumps, including a world-record formation recognized by the United States Parachute Association. For Kenny, skydiving wasn't simply a hobby, it was a way of life that perfectly reflected his adventurous spirit and fearless approach to living. Outside of skydiving, Kenny found joy in life's simple moments. He loved telling stories, making people laugh, watching movies, and creating adventures wherever he went. He affectionately called children "rugrats" and "squirrels," though he was always the first one on the ground playing alongside them. Children adored him, just as animals did. Dogs seemed to instinctively know they had found a friend, often gravitating toward him the moment they met. Above all, Kenny loved his family, and he left his spirit with each one of them. Nothing made him prouder than his son, Christopher Melillo, who shared his love of spontaneity. He leaves behind his sisters, Bonnie Gardner and Rosie Manson; his brothers, Tony Backus and Charles Backus; his cherished niece; many beloved cousins; and countless friends whose lives are richer because they knew him. Some people leave memories. Others leave a legacy. Kenny left both. He was the friend who became a brother, the person everyone could depend on, the one whose laughter filled every room, and whose heart was even bigger than his smile. His absence leaves a space that can never truly be filled, but his spirit will continue to live on through the stories shared, the lives he changed, and the love he gave so freely.
