Mr. Don Long

Mr. Don Long, 60, of Sumner died Wednesday, May 3, 2017 at Tift Regional Medical Center. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, May 6, 2017 at Banks Funeral Home Chapel with interment to follow in the Hillcrest Cemetery. Rev. Matt Greene, Rev. Brad Hughes, Rev. Wallace Willis and Rev. Howard Vogan will officiate. Mr. Long was born on July 25, 1956 in York, AL to the late Donald Emmette and Betty Clem Long. He had lived in Worth County since 2003 moving here from Alabama where he lived most of his life. Mr. Long was the Owner and Operator of Gibbs Pecans and Shelling. He spent many years working in Public Safety as a firefighter, EMT and Rescue Specialist while living in Alabama. Mr. Long was active in the local community having served on the City Council and as the Mayor for the City of Sumner. He enjoyed ministering to young people by coaching soccer, baseball and Upwards basketball teams. Mr. Long was active in numerous outreach ministries of various churches. He loved his Lord and did his best to live his life as an example of Christ's love to others. Mr. Long was a member of Terrell Baptist Church. Survivors include his loving wife, Jane Chapman Long of Sumner; son, Jonathon Long of Jasper, AL; step-children, Patrick Watkins (Linda) of Sumner, Susan Watkins and Hettie Watkins, both of Salisbury, NC; grandchildren, Lyla Long; George Miller and Evan Miller; sister, Cindy Blackwood (Keith) of Cullman, AL; niece, Emily Chandler (Stephen); nephew, Keith Blackwood, Jr. (Maggie); adopted children, Billy & Betty Dorsey of Sumner and Brad & Holly Hughes of Coverdale; adopted grandchildren, Ashlee Dorsey, Alexis Dorsey, Brandon Hughes, Jonathan Hughes and Rebekah Hughes and his beloved canine companions, Charlie, Brownie, Crew and Otis. In addition to his parents, Mr. Long was preceded in death by a brother, Selby Stephen Long.
