Mr. Joseph C. Shirley, 81, of Sylvester died Saturday December 8, 2012 at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday December 13, 2012 at the First Baptist Church with Dr. Ben Bush and Rev. Earnie Pirkle officiating. Mr. Shirley was born on February 9, 1931 to the late Joseph William and Lizzie Mae Sutton Shirley in Dougherty County and had lived in Sylvester since 1977 moving here from Davenport, Iowa. He was the owner/ operator of Shirley Chiropractic. Mr. Shirley was a former member of the Sylvester Lions Club for 25 years and held various offices including Past Deputy District Governor for District 18-C and received the Lions Melvin Jones Fellow Certificate of Appreciation from Lions International. He was a member of First Baptist Church and the Elton Baker Sunday School Class. Mr. Shirley enjoyed woodworking and participating in the Georgia Peanut Festival where he assisted in the Parade. Survivors include his wife Sue Perkins Shirley of Sylvester; sons, Daniel Joseph Shirley of Dallas, GA; daughter, Gail Shirley of Winston Salem, NC; brothers, Donald E. Shirley of Albany and John Marion Shirley of Snellville; grandchildren, Sarah, Chelsey, Courtney and Candace Shirley. In addition to his parents, Mr. Shirley was preceded in death by three sons James Mark Shirley, David Michael Shirley, Larry Shirley and a grandson Matthew Carl Shirley. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Banks Funeral Home.
