Mr. John Franklin Porter

December 27, 1933 - March 1, 2022

Mr. John Franklin Porter, 88, of Poulan died Tuesday, March 1, 2022 at his residence. The funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, March 4 at Poulan United Methodist Church, interment will follow in the Poulan Cemetery. The Rev. Dan Harper will officiate. Mr. Porter was born December 27, 1933 in Poulan to the late Horace Greely “HG” and Bessie Porter. He was a graduate of Sylvester High School in 1950. He lived all of his life in Poulan and was the former owner of The Sylvester Local News, where he worked for nearly 72 years. Mr. Porter was an active and devoted member of Poulan Methodist Church all of his life where he served in many capacities. He was a founding member of the Poulan Lions Club. In his earlier years, he served as a volunteer fireman and volunteer policeman with the city of Poulan. He also served in the National Guard. When he was younger, he loved to dove hunt, play softball, and work in his garden. Mr. Porter loved spending time with his family, and he loved his great grandchildren immensely. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Lucille Porter of Poulan; daughter Carol Buchanan and son John Porter, Jr. (Rosemary) all of Sylvester; grandchildren Teresa Hardin (Greg) of Poulan, John Buchanan (Laurel) of Dallas, TX, Jeana Klearman, Jessie Porter (Amanda) of Brooklet, and Stephen Porter (Jessica) of Columbus. Great grandchildren are Grace Anne, Laura, Emma and Madelyn Hardin of Poulan; Charity, Hannah, and Tabitha Porter of Brooklet; and Ian, Lily, and Jude Porter of Columbus. He is also survived by his sister, Vera Kilcrease, of Poulan and many friends and extended family members, church family, and great friends in the Poulan Lions Club. Mr. Porter was a strong rock in both his church and family, and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
