Mrs. Jane Houston Young

May 16, 1939 - March 11, 2022

Mrs. Sarah (Jane) Houston Young, 82, of Shingler passed away at her residence on March 11, 2022. Her visitation will be from 1:00 to 2:00 Tuesday, March 15, 2022, at First Baptist Church of Sylvester. Her funeral will follow at 2:00 in the First Baptist Church sanctuary. She will be laid to rest at Poulan Cemetery near her childhood home. Jett Young, Wesley Weaver, Charlie Pate, Cody Rogers, Zachery Brown, and Jeremy Booth will serve as pallbearers. Mrs. Young was born on May 16,1939 to John Webster Houston and Gertrude Hobby Houston. She was the younger sister of John Hobby Houston. She is a member of First Baptist Church of Sylvester where she attended faithfully until her health no longer permitted. From her childhood through most of her adult life she was a member of Poulan Baptist Church where she served in many capacities: choir member, nursery worker, children’s choir director, Vacation Bible School teacher, Sunday school teacher, committee member for various committees, and church hostess. She loved her church families, and most of all she loved serving her Lord and singing His praises. After the death of her mother in 1943, she was taken in and raised in Poulan by her beloved Aunt Gert and Uncle Russell Houston. She graduated from Sylvester Highschool in 1957 as the salutatorian of her class. In her youth she was crowned Miss Poulan. She married the love of her life James Walter Young, and together they created a beautiful life which included 5 children and a 65 year loving marriage. Her greatest treasures were her children: Walt Young (Tracy Hembree), Scott Young (Jackie York), Beverly Sutton (Steve), Stacy Weaver (Robert), and Joe Young (Nicole Jones). Her second greatest treasures were her grandchildren: Walt’s children- Russ Young (Michelle), April Young (Kelley), & Crystal Gottshall (Shannon); Scott’s children- Lizette Anthonijs (Eric), Jared Young (Nicole), & Morgan Young (Sarah); Beverly’s children- Brooke Pate (Chad), Caitlin Lumpkin (Trent), Cori Beth Brown (Zach); Stacy’s child-Wesley Weaver (Abbey), and Joe’s children- Josey, Jett, Jones, Jonah, and Jace Young. Her third greatest treasures were her great -grandchildren. Mrs. Young was preceded in death by her parents Webster and Gertrude H. Houston, her uncle and aunt who raised her, Russell and Gertrude Houston, her brother John Hobby Houston, and her eldest son Walt R. Young. She never retired from her professions of homemaker, farmer’s wife, and mother. She enjoyed reading and loved to sing. She leaves behind a legacy of love and song which we shall carry on for generations to come, along with, our fondest and most humorous memories of our “Big Mama” as she was affectionately known by her grands and others in her later years. We know she is singing the “Wondrous love of Jesus” in the angel chorus. “Sing it, Mama!”
