Miss Eula Gwines Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Miss Mary Eula Gwines, 90, of Sylvester died Tuesday June 14, 2011 at Pine Shadows Retirement Manor. Funeral services will be at held at 2:00 PM on Friday June 17, 2011 at Gordy-New Bethel Baptist Church with interment to follow in the Mt. Pisgah Cemetery with Rev. Mike Carter officiating. Miss Gwines was born on November 18, 1920 to the late George Columbus and Caromae Culpepper Gwines in Worth County. She graduated from Sylvester High School and Georgia Southwestern College, earned the B.S. Education degree from Georgia Southeren College, the Master of Arts degree from George Peabody College for Teachers in Nashville, TN and completed work for the Specialist in Education degree at the University of Georgia. She taught 1st grade many years and taught beginning algebra as well as being a high school counselor. She received many awards such as teacher of the year, Star Teacher and 2nd district counselor of the year. She sponsored Future Teachers Scholarships, was Gordy-New Bethel Baptist Church treasurer for 40 years, a Sunday School teacher, a pianist, a member of Kate White Circle, U.D.C., D.A.R., A.A.R.P., B & P. W. and Retired Educators Association. Miss Gwines retired in 1988 after 46 years of teaching. After retirement she did tutoring and in home teaching. Survivors include sister-in law Elizabeth Gwines, nieces Susan Goff (Don), Ann McClure (Jimmy), June Carter (Mike), Carole Hughes (Frederick), nephew Mark Gwines (Robin), great nieces and nephews Jennifer Gardner, Michael Goff, Michael Carter, Cara Hill, Matt McClure, Leslie McClure, Rebecca Hughes, Shelvey Giddens, Luke & Peyton Gwines, great great nieces & nephews Aaron, Jeremy, Marissa Garder, Braydon &Carter Goff, and Carter Hill. Family will receive friends from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Thursday at Banks Funeral Home.
