Mr. J. Walter Young

Mr. James ( Walter) Young, 89, of Shingler passed away on Saturday, May 10, 2025 at his residence in Shingler, Ga. His visitation will be held at First Baptist Church in Sylvester, Ga. from 10:00-11:00 Monday, May 12, 2025. The funeral will follow at 11:00. Officiates will be Rev. Donnie Duncan and Rev. Danny Culpepper. Internment will occur at Poulan Cemetery. His pallbearers will be his grandsons: Russ Young, Jared Young, Wesley Weaver, Jett Young, Jones Young, Jonah Young, and his great-grandson Charlie Pate. J. Walter Young was born at home on his family’s farm in Sumner, Georgia in 1935. He was the third child and first born son of William Martin and Lollie Rene Souter Young. He grew up learning how to work on his family’s farm. He was born into a large, loving, methodist family. His was the last graduating class from Sumner School that only had to attend up through eleventh grade before graduating high school. He met Jane Houston, and they later married in June of 1956. He converted to the Baptist faith after marrying his wife. He and she had been members of Poulan Baptist Church where he had served as a committee member, a Sunday school teacher, and a deacon. In the mid 2000’s he and his wife joined First Baptist Church of Sylvester where they actively attended until their health no longer allowed them. He married the love of his life Jane Houston Young, and together they created a beautiful life which included 5 children and a 65 year, loving marriage. He was the proud father of: Walt Young (Tracy Hembree), Scott Young (Jackie York), Beverly Sutton (Steve), Stacy Weaver (Robert), and Joe Young (Nicole Jones). He was the proud “Big Daddy” of: Russ Young (Michelle), April Young (Kelley), Crystal Gottshall (Shannon), Lizette Young-Lee (Melvin), Jared Young (Nichole), Morgan Young (Sarah), Brooke Pate (Chad), Caitlin Lumpkin (Trent), Cori Beth Brown (Zach),Wesley Weaver (Abbey), Josey Young, Jett Young, Jones Young, Jonah Young, and Jace Young. He was blessed to be the great grandfather to fifteen precious great grandchildren. He was a loving and loyal brother to his two surviving, younger siblings Merle Knight of Dawson, Jerry (Cindy) Young of Ashburn, and sisters-in-law Vicki Young (Billy) and Joyce Houston (Hobby). Mr. Young was preceded in death by his parents Bill and Lollie Rene Young, wife Jane Houston Young, eldest son Walt Young, grandson Morgan Young, sisters Melba Jean Jordan, Betty Nelson, and brother Billy Young. He was a man of many hats: farmer, Texaco gas distributor, owner of Evro Propane Gas Company, and owner of Sylvester Auto Parts. He worked to live and lived to work! In his retirement he enjoyed planting summer gardens, raising cattle, and working around his farm in Shingler. He was an honest man, hard worker, good neighbor, and an even better husband and father. He loved his family from beginning to end. “Lonewolf”,as he often referred to himself in jest, is no longer alone; he is with Jane and Jesus! “Lonewolf, you copy? Scott, Bev., “Poochie”, and “Chaddy” will see you again! 10-4 until then.”
