Dr. Frederick L. McLean

Dr. Frederick L. McLean, 86, of Sylvester, died on Tuesday, June 13, 2023, at Pruitt Healthcare Sylvester. The funeral service will be held at 3:00 PM on Friday, June 16, 2023, at the First Baptist Church of Sylvester, interment will follow in the Hillcrest Cemetery. The Rev. Donnie Duncan, Rev. Grady Morey and Dr. Jason Jones will officiate. Dr. Frederick L. McLean was born October 6, 1936, in Folkston, Georgia, to Thomas Hugh McLean Sr. and Mary Lucille Brock McLean. He has been a resident of Worth County since 1963 where he practiced family medicine. “Dr. Mac” practiced medicine for 37 years in Worth County and surrounding areas. His intuitive diagnostic skills and personable bedside manner is why he is still referred to by many locals as “my family's doctor who took care of everything.” During this time, he served the community in numerous medical capacities. As a family physician, he delivered babies, performed surgeries, and even made house calls. His additional medical roles included Worth County Medical Examiner, Chairman of the Worth County Board of Health, Founder and Director of Worth County Emergency Medical Services, member of the Governing Board Worth County Hospital Inc., and Medical Director of the Worth County Health Department and Sylvester Healthcare. Dr. McLean’s professional affiliations included the Medical Association of Georgia, American Medical Association, and Worth County Medical Society. He was proud to be a licensed Doctor of Medicine in both Georgia and Florida. He also served as a Captain in the Air Force Reserve Medical Corps. Dr. McLean also served the Worth County community through numerous civic organizations including Worth Lodge 194, Kiwanis, Worth County Rotary, and Worth County Rams Athletics. His dedication to the community was matched by his devotion to his family who will also remember him as a selfless and loving provider. His “supervisory skills” often led to him providing instructions while avoiding manual labor. As a husband and father, he modeled unending patience and generosity. Dr. McLean was an active and dedicated member of First Baptist Church of Sylvester. Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Carol Avery McLean; brother Omer McLean (Pat) of Baxley, and sister Margaret McLean O’Hearn also of Sylvester; children: Diane McLean Sikes (Kenny) of Sylvester, Linda McLean Landrum (Tony) of Ochlocknee, John Gray McLean of Sylvester, Deborah McLean Bruce (Shane) of Enigma, Christopher David Deariso (Katie) of North Carolina, and Frederick Lanier McLean II of Sylvester; grandchildren: Kara Sikes Wilson (Bert), TJ Landrum (Niki), Kiana Landrum Cavin (Matt), Shayna Bruce, Seth Bruce, and Madison Dopson; great grandchildren: Millie Kate Wilson, Jhett Alan Wilson, Peyton Wilson, Kason Landrum, Jace Dickson, Tyler Landrum, and Kimber Landrum and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Dr. McLean was proceeded in death by his brother, Thomas Hugh McLean Jr.; sisters, Helen Newell and Vanice McLean; also, an infant daughter, Lisa Claire McLean and his first wife, Mary Ann Stokes.
