Mr. Billy Young

William M. Young, Jr, 77, of Worth County, died Friday, December 6, 2024, at his home surrounded by his family. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM on Tuesday, December 10, 2024 at the Chapel of Banks Funeral Home with Reverend Danny Culpepper and nephew, Floyd Nelson officiating. Interment will follow in the Shingler Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00-3:00 PM on Tuesday before the service. Billy was born April 6, 1947 at the family home in Sumner, GA to the late William M. Young, Sr and Laurene Souter Young (Lollie). Raised in a Christian home and living all his life in Worth County, he had a great love for his family, friends and community. Billy was a long-time member of Poulan Baptist Church, where he was baptized, and later a member at Terrell Baptist Church. He was a 1966 graduate of Worth County High School and has been very active in the planning of class reunions. After high school, he asked the love of his life, Vickie Willis Young, to marry and they lived 57 years together while raising two wonderful sons. Because of his strong work ethic and faith, Billy was blessed to pursue his love for farming as his lifelong career and provide a comfortable life for his family. Those years provided him with many lessons and lots of stories, all of which he loved to share with all whom he came in contact. Anyone who stopped to listen would be instantly enthralled and usually leave laughing and with a smile on their face. His passion for farming was something that he loved to pass down to his sons, Chris and Jeffrey, as well as his grandsons, Garet and Jaime. Pop did not leave his granddaughters out when it came to sharing agriculture. Taylor-Beth and Jill could stack and toss watermelons just as good as their brothers. Pop enjoyed the quality time spent with his grandchildren while they worked alongside him every Summer in the watermelon field. His love for Agriculture led him to become an advocate by serving on several committees and boards, including Farm Service Agency and the Soil Conservation Board. In his later years, when he began to slow down and let his sons carry the load, Billy loved to grill and discovered chicken to be his specialty. Billy had a heart of gold. He loved people and he never met a stranger. Billy has left a legacy of love for his family. Those who he left behind will miss him terribly but rejoice in knowing he is with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He must have been so happy to see his mother and daddy, his mother-in-law and father-in-law, his very close friends, Doyle Hancock, Mack Culpepper and Randy Gunter, and many more. We know that he is talking to his heart’s content. Serving as pallbearers are Daniel Merritt, Sheldon Cooper, Darien Culpepper, Ben Culpepper, Josh White, Justin Cooper, Hunter Paulk, Braxton Cooper and Keith Rigsby. Although not related by blood, they all loved Mr. Billy and called him Pop. Honoring their Uncle Billy in song will be his nieces, Cori Beth Brown and Brooke Pate. Billy is survived by his loving wife, Vickie Willis Young, his two sons and their wives, Chris and Missy Young and Jeffrey and Traci Young all of Sumner; eight grandchildren, Garet Young (Brittany), Taylor-Beth Weaver (Heath), Jill Farmer (Hunter), Jaime Young (fiancé, Chassidy), Trey Young, Cole Young, Carson Bryan and Elli Bryan; great grandchildren, Skylar Young, Piper Young, Sidney Young, Millie Weaver, Bailey Weaver and Case Weaver; siblings, Bettye Y. Nelson (James, dec.) of Ashburn, J. Walter Young (Jane, dec.) of Shingler, Merle Y. Knight (Gene, dec.) of Dawson and Jerry Mack Young (Cindy) of Sumner. Also survivors are in-laws, Bob and Theresa W. Vaglienti, Wendell G. and Ann Willis, Clari W. and Delbert Douglas, Cynthia W. Parrish, Tony D. and Janet P. Willis, all of Worth County, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister, Melba Jean Young Jordan and her husband Elmore of Sumner, as well as his mother and father in-law, Grafton and Doris Lamb Willis.
